Siting the nest box
Barns owls prefer open countryside over woodlands. Position the barn owl box in an open area on a tree, building, or barn at the edge of a wooded area. After finding a suitable spot, install the box 2.5-5 meters high, ideally facing east, northeast or southeast, with a clear flight path to the entrance.
Barn owls are at high risk of being hit by vehicles when hunting due to their low flight patterns. Do not place the nest box within 1/2 mile of any major roads.
The presence of vole-rich grasslands and less intensively managed habitats are key factors when selecting an optimal site for a barn owl nest box.
